My Students
We are ready to blast off! My 5th grade students are sending a fish embryology experiment to space on STS-135, the last flight of Space Shuttle Atlantis.
Our school is a Chicago Public School located in the city’s West Loop/Near West Side neighborhood.
Twenty-eight percent of our students are low income, and eighty-five percent are minorities. Our school currently serves 700 children in grades preschool through 8.
My Project
These materials will enable my students to send an experiment to space with the Student Spaceflight Experiments Program. This amazing program is giving my students the chance to actually be scientists, designing real experiments for spaceflight.
My students recently participated in a microgravity experiment design competition. The winning experiment, a goldfish embryology study, will fly to space this summer on Atlantis. The materials I am requesting are needed to harvest, store, and observe the fertilized fish eggs. We will use the pipettes to remove the eggs from our classroom tank. We will fertilize the eggs in a Petri dish, and store the fertilized eggs in tissue flasks in the refrigerator. We will use the test tubes to ship our samples to Kennedy Space Center.
This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime learning opportunity that is inspiring hundreds of Chicago Public School students to pursue further studies in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
