My students attend a public school in Queens, New York. Many are new immigrants. They come from many different countries including China, Korea, Greece, Pakistan, India, Egypt and Columbia. The class is a true melting pot and we love to share about our different cultures.
My students do not have access to supplies and manipulatives needed to learn, due to both monetary issues and the impact of Covid-19 on their families.
Many live in small apartments with siblings, parents, grandparents and other relatives. They are trying to do the best they can with what they have. They want to participate and learn, but due to coronavirus, students in class cannot share materials and children that are remote do not have access to materials at home.
I wish that you could see my students learn. They are so excited to use dice and counters to figure out solutions to a math problem. With your help, I will see my students' faces light up as they work with their own sets of materials to solve problems and learn skills through hands-on activities.
My Project
My first grade students are returning to class after some time learning remotely. By incorporating art into the curriculum areas, children can engage in experiential learning as they complete art projects. Art gives the children a means to express their emotions, which is critical as they return to class.
Drawing and painting become an outlet for expression as they transition back into the classroom.
As we learn about characters and making characters come alive in reading, students will use various art techniques to create their own characters and add feeling to their drawings by blending oil pastels and using tempera paints to add more layers. During science they will use the art supplies to create a postage stamp to commemorate a holiday. Of course, they will use tissue paper and paint during SEL lessons as well.
Help me get these needed art supplies into the hands of my students so that they can continue to learn and grow as they come back to my classroom!
