Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach History in Spanish in a Dual Language program at a public high school whose population is classified as low-income or at-risk. Even so, when my students come to class, each one brings joy and enthusiasm for learning and a great diversity of knowledge and experiences that I want them to continue to enrich and transform throughout their lives.

My Spanish heritage speakers students understand that being bilingual today is a great advantage that will allow them to develop cultural awareness and respectful interactions in increasingly diverse societies.

My bilingual children have been fortunate enough to be born and raised in the midst of two languages, yet most of them still struggle to communicate more fluently in Spanish, so they need educational tools and resources to enhance their language skills.

My Project

Who said that the teacher is the only one who explains? at least I didn't. On the contrary, I want my students to drive their own learning, and this can only be achieved by providing them with the opportunity to create, explore, adapt, analyze and explain their own ideas. One of the ways to do this is through the use of dry erase easels.

When my students are in front of their peers explaining historical events, the thesis of their essays, historical connections, among others, it generates a mental and social stimulus that drives them to be more aware of what they are learning.

With the dry erase easels it will be easier and more comfortable for my students to express their thoughts and encourage them to take ownership of their own learning. While practicing content and historical skills, this resource will greatly enhance their Spanish language skills, as the fact that their peers are visualizing their ideas, leads them to be more aware of how they organize their words.
