Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a beginning Science teacher working at a Charter Public High School in a large California city. We educate hard-working minority students from the worst neighborhoods in our city. Most of our students parents have not finished high school, and yet our students are dedicated and that’s why we are the number 2 school in our city by state scores. We are the 2nd ever school in our city to receive the federal Blue Ribbon award of excellence.
Our students are 90% Hispanic, 4% African American and 6% Asian. Over 90% of our students are eligible for free or reduced lunch. These students deserve the same opportunities as the students anywhere else, but they don't get them often.
Our crime-ridden city has one of the worst drop-out rates in the country, but our students love our school because we provide a safe and challenging environment.
My students are very excited about science, especially biology and possible future careers in the biology field. However, we are a small charter school and our funds for materials are limited. Most funds are spent on facilities, textbooks and staffing.
Having a life-size model of the Human Skeleton, which shows muscles, ligaments and bone structure, has removable parts and comes packaged with experiential activities would be gold in my classroom.
Most of our students will be the first members of their families to go college. To help them get there, we try to offer required science course, like Honors Biology. Your support of our Biology program will help us prepare students for college and give them the same tools that are available in high performing college prep schools. A lot of my students are interested in pursuing careers in medicine while in college, and your donation will help fuel their interest in Human Physiology.
