On the 60th anniversary of the Holocaust, eleven of my students and I were invited to attend a Holocaust Remembrance Breakfast hosted by Mayor Richard M. Daley of Chicago, Illinois. This invitation was a direct response after my English as a Second Language students planned and organized a school-wide exhibit of sixty different events, places and important persona of the Holocaust. My students did a tremendous amount of learning and growing through this unit and were excited about the positive response they received by other students in the school and the administration. Since I teach in an inner-city high school where the student population is comprised of students from all over the world, opinions about this historic event were plenty. It became quickly apparent that no one, including myself, really knew much about the Holocaust. My students and I dove into our research with such desire to learn. However, we soon found out that our research would prove difficult. Even though there is a large amount of information available, our school library has very little to offer in terms of substance. We found material that was either too difficult to understand, or required additional resources, or material that was too superficial. In fact, the public library close to our school was not much help either, and research in our school's computer lab was difficult to conduct since most sites were blocked by the Chicago Public Schools' firewall filters. Soon it will be required for me to cover the Holocaust again. I want this group of students to learn even more about the Holocaust than my students did last year. I do not want to hear, "I can't find anything about this person." How frustrating is that? Please help us build a comprehensive Holocaust classroom library which will give my students the necessary resources and a comprehensive and clear picture of this important historical event. The lack of resources should not be a factor for this important event to lose its importance because my students lack the resources. These children are our future, and history is our past. We cannot deny our children the opportunity to learn from it.
