This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you ever doodle while on the phone? Or tap your fingers/feet while sitting? Or how about tap your pencil when you're trying to remember something? Sitting still is overrated, especially for some students with special needs.

I'm a first year teacher for 4th and 5th grade students with special needs, including students with learning disabilities, autism, intellectual disabilities, and emotional disabilities.

My students enjoy working with each other and love helping each other learn. Many of my students have difficulties focusing during instruction. In order to help them focus, they doodle, tap with their pencil, etc. Even though we are in a very low income neighborhood, my students are fun, energetic and have a love for learning.

My Project

I'm requesting multiple sensory items for my students to use in my class. I'm requesting wiggle seats, which are inflatable seat cushions that allow students to sit and move without disrupting class. I'm requesting ear muffs for my students with Autism when the class is becoming too loud. I'm also requesting a few other fidgets that my students can use in class such as fidgets they can play with in their seats, and fidgets that attach to their chairs that they can play with under their desks. I envision these sensory items helping all of the students in my classroom. Using these sensory items, my students will be able to fulfill their sensory needs before attempting school work. My students will be able to fidget while they work, and focus on what is being taught to them, rather than look around and search for what they can play with that will fulfill their sensory needs. My students will learn that there are strategies they can use that will help them focus while in the classroom.

This donation will improve my classroom immensely.

I will have actual sensory items for my students to use while I'm teaching. I will be able to provide my students with materials that they can use to help them manage their sensory needs, while also paying attention and learning!
