My students need need flexible seating options in a classroom environment that is conducive to optimal learning, for example, standing desks for active students or comfortable bean bags to encourage extended reading.

My Students

My students are hardworking and determined scholars from all walks of life. Daily, they are discovering and learning to embrace the benefits of education through various activities like poetry, short stories, Socratic seminars, poster summaries, and lively discussions. They have so much untapped potential and so many talents. These scholars strive to support me in providing a nurturing classroom community, where we all learn and grow together as a family. It is amazing to watch my students lead restorative practice and/or academic circles or mediate issues among their peers with little to no support from adults.

My students are resilient because, despite the many obstacles and opposing outside factors they face, they still show up every day, ready to learn.

I have classes full of writers, readers, thinkers, innovators, leaders, artists, and even some future teachers, who operate as teacher assistants! They are curious, proud, inquisitive, humorous, and caring. Even on the less desirable days, the light of their vivid imaginations and eager minds shines through!

My Project

Small desks and hard chairs are less than desirable to most students. Comfort and accommodation are key components for fostering and supporting learning. It is necessary to provide students with options such as standing desks to complete assignments or soothing bean bags that they can move and locate to their liking. Simple changes such as seating arrangements and seating type has been proven to make a huge impact on student learning. Furthermore, having options, especially creative seating preferences, motivate students to engage in the learning process and achieve. In short, deviation from the traditional is needed to make a real, effective impact; things as small as a variety of seating options will change a scholar's outlook on learning and enhance motivation.
