My mission is to make reading as much fun as possible for my young students. I want them to be able to participate in reading activities in the same way grown-ups do: laid back in a comfy chair with a story that awakens their imagination and stimulates their minds!
My students attend a Title I school and the vast majority of them are from low-income households.
Some of them face struggles and hardships that no child should ever have to deal with, but at school, they can feel safe and accepted. I am not just their teacher, I am their counselor, mentor, leader, and sometimes mother. It is up to me to make sure their time with me is valuable, enjoyable, and prepares them for their future education and life.
My Project
These colorful, comfortable chairs will give my students a better option for reading centers and independent reading time as opposed to the hard-back plastic and metal chairs they have to sit in for the majority of their day. Today's curricula requires so much out of my students, but my sweet second graders deserve to have a little fun while they're learning. They already love to read, now I want to improve their environment for reading!
I have successfully instilled a love of reading in my students by providing them with a diverse classroom library (mostly funded by me) and by being a model of an avid reader for them.
They crave independent reading time so they can explore the world through the pages of a book. These chairs will provide just the place for them to relax into a good book.
