My students need five standing desks and five wobble stools in order to have more seating options that will help them actively engage in collaboration and communication.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our 12th grade students this year will be the first students to graduate our high school. We opened the school during the 2013-2014 school year with three little bungalows on a shared campus. Three+ years later, we have our own building and our own furniture, and we are also one of the most successful charter schools in Los Angeles. This year, the class of 2017 is applying to college, and we can't wait to see what they can accomplish.
Our students are a family.
They are problem solvers, and they are agents of change. We want to continuously improve, push our thinking, and innovate in order to do our part in closing the achievement gap that exists between students from a high socioeconomic status and students who will be the first generation in their families to attend a university. Our students do this by persevering, taking rigorous coursework, and participating in our STEM academies. (We offer courses in Engineering, Biomedical Science, and Computer Science.) They see how the skills they learn in high school (mathematical skills and communication skills) will directly benefit them in college and in their careers.
My Project
The materials I am asking for will help create an environment where students can efficiently collaborate, communicate, be creative, and think critically. In rows of desks, this is difficult to do. Learning mathematics is really about reasoning, problem solving, and communication, but my classroom is not currently set up this way. I was inspired when my students asked me if they could work on the big whiteboard on the wall. "Of course!" I said. I watched as students asked each other questions, persevered through difficult problems, and increased their achievement.
As my students started to be more creative with problem solving, they started to tinker with the set up of the classroom.
They stacked desks, books, stools, and anything available in the classroom to make their own standing desks. They asked for the regular chairs to be removed so they have more space. It has become precarious! My students deserve the world, and right now what they want is a more creative, diversified learning environment. I want to give this to them. I want them to learn about themselves and the conditions in which they most thrive. Hopefully, you can help with these standing desks and wobble stools!
