Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is located on the lower-economic side of town. 99% of our students are of low income and, unfortunately, we do have a couple that are labeled as homeless. Even though these students face these hardships daily, they are also very hard-working children with many aspiring dreams and goals. They pose a great value toward education and give no excuses when asked to give it their all and work toward their goals.

My students have a lot of potential to be the great leaders of tomorrow.

Some of them may not even have their parents' support because of harsh situations, but they do come in every day to school ready to learn and be a better person every day. They come in the classroom and try very hard to leave their issues behind and start off the day in a positive way ready to learn and get closer to reaching their dreams!

My Project

These flexible seating options for my students will help them stay focused in class and ease their way into learning. Being a 6 year old within four walls is not easy. They have a lot of energy to spare and need a way to keep it controlled other than on a four-legged chair. Even as adults we may need some type of distraction or comfort in order to stay focused and complete our work, whether it be music, a comfortable rolling chair, or a padded back cushion.

Besides helping them stay focused, the students will feel more "at-home" in a setting in which they get to choose how they want to learn.

Whether it be a bouncy ball, lap desk, or wobble chair, these seating options will be each student's personal choice and therefore will allow them to feel more in control of their learning environment. Being in their comfort zone will even help reduce the stress throughout the day and have a more open mind about their learning experience.

These students get here every morning with a million personal issues going through their mind, being that they come from low income households. Coming into a classroom in which they know they have a choice, even if it's just about a seat, will help them see how important it is to make good personal decisions and even make them feel a bit more special. As a teacher it is my job to help them have that sensation of importance every day and let them know that there is nothing that can stop them from reaching their dreams!
