My Students

"You have brains in your head, you have feet in your shoes, you can steer yourself any direction you choose" is one of my all-time favorite Dr.Seuss quotes. Unfortunately, some of my students will never get to hear any of Dr. Seuss' inspiring books unless they are hearing them in my classroom.

Our classroom is comprised of 12 boys and 10 girls for a grand total of 22.

We have 1 teacher and 1 teacher's assistant. Our assistant is only in our classroom for instructional time for about 90 minutes a day. We share our assistant with the teacher next door to us. We belong to a Title 1 school of over 800 students! We are wacky and wild, but we are a family. My students are coming to school with an open mind and ready to learn even though they may not have had a shower or dinner the night before. They are full of love and imagination and would absolutely love listening to some of these new stories being read to them.

My Project

Since I am only a second year teacher, I do not have many mentor texts to refer to when I am demonstrating the new reading skills. My students are constantly being read the same few books over and over because of our lack of mentor texts. As a teacher, it is my duty to expose these beginning readers to many different types of texts and stories. At this moment, I am having to borrow books from the library and other teachers around the school to be able to teach my reading lessons. My students would greatly benefit from having these new mentor texts in our class. They need to hear and see good examples of books that are grade-level appropriate and how to apply these new reading skills to their own books at their independent reading level. Without quality mentor texts, I am expecting my students to understand and apply these new reading skills without being shown how to use them in a book.

If we were able to get new books into our classroom, my students would continue to get excited and thrive on reading.

At this point, I am beginning to notice some of my readers getting bored with reading the same texts over and over again. It breaks my heart to see their love for reading being squandered at such a young age. If they had access to new and exciting books that they had never read before, I think they would continue to love reading!
