My Students
Creating a cozy and inviting learning space allows students to learn in a comfortable setting. As an Kindergarten EL teacher, I need more flexibility in my classroom which does not force students to sit only in a chair at a table.
I teach Kindergarten EL in a Title I school ranging from Kindergartners who speak little to no English to students who come already knowing all of their letters and sounds.
ALL of my students are very hard workers. They want to do well, and I want to provide them with the tools to do so! In order to let them feel empowered, I want to provide them with the ability to choose how they can and will learn best. Each student is doing the best they can and I want to help them become better readers, writers, and problem solvers and therefore better students. By providing each student with their choice of alternative seating, they will have the opportunity to choose the seating that they feel will help them focus on their learning.
My Project
My students will be given the opportunity to choose where they will sit during their reading and math lessons. Giving them this choice empowers them and will encourage their participation and academic growth. Students will have the option of sitting on balls, beanbag chairs, wobbly disks, frog chairs, frog stools, and floor pillows. As their teacher, I provide my students with a structured reading lesson tailored to their specific needs, but by allowing the students to choose where they will sit, they will take ownership of their learning. Opening up the seating options encourages student engagement and will help form a better classroom community.
Alternative and flexible seating is one way I can give my students "structured" freedom.
The seating choices will make our classroom a more inviting and comfortable setting. It will set it apart from the rest of their day, encourage participation and engagement, and flips any negative connotation into a fun break in their day while still learning and growing.
