This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach kindergarten in Queensbridge, NYC, a school whose children come from two surrounding projects. Despite the poor circumstances my children come from, they come in eager and ready to learn!
Though my class has made great accomplishments this school year, it has been very hard since we do not have a proper meeting area. To help in this I have placed a puzzle mat to create a fun environment conducive to learning. Though the mat is great and my students love it, it is also very distracting as the pieces come apart very easily. While trying to read or teach math, I will often have to redirect the children pulling apart or putting the mat together. This wastes time, and keeps them from learning.
Our class needs a new carpet for their meeting area. We need one large enough to sit all of them comfortably, allowing a designated spot for each so there is no confusion about who sits where.
My students are great, but 4, 5, and 6 year olds distract easily. Having a spot all their own, without puzzle pieces to distract them, will help them learn tremendously!
