My Students
My students are a group of lively, loving, energetic, and inspirational young children. They are excited about learning and growing their brains. They are invested in both their ability to learn and their classmates' ability to do so. They work together as a team and are constantly encouraging one another. Throughout the year they have learned to face challenges head on and see work that seems hard as an opportunity to grow. They are full of smiles and laughter and pats on the backs and high fives. It has been an honor to teach them and watch them grow. I know my group next year will posses just as much love for one another and the same joy for learning, and I hope with the help of DonorsChoose.org we will be just as prepared for a great year!
My Project
These classic songs and nursery rhymes are essential at the beginning of the school year! The repetitive words, vibrant pictures, and rhyme sequences help children to quickly learn and fall in love with these books. Students also love working in pairs or small groups to follow along with the words and sing the songs together! Seeing students learning cooperatively and feeling like part of a team working towards their common goal of growing their brains and becoming readers is amazing!
Children quickly learn the songs and rhymes and "read" the books by following along with the words; before you know it, they feel like real readers!
They build confidence and fall in love with reading. Rhyming is also incremental for our youngest readers, and particularly kindergarten students, as it builds an awareness of sounds. This helps children learn letter sounds, word families, and helps them to decode later creating more successful and confident readers!
The ability for students to read these books independently early on also helps to build a strong readers' workshop at the beginning of the school year. This makes it possible to set up routines and create a culture of learning, fun, exploration, confidence, and joy from day one! Students are comfortable with reading even before they can actually read, and they enjoy learning to recognize the words.
