Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class of 20 diverse, urban kindergarten students remember the lessons we learn through songs and music more than any others. Most of my students live below the poverty line, are English language learners, and have not attended preschool.
I am writing this grant for a number of music CDs that will draw children into curricular concepts and create pathways in their brains that would not be possible without the musical element. It is amazing to watch the connections that remain even months later after using songs and movements to teach concepts. It is my goal to use music and movement whenever I can to promote lasting learning connections.
This summer at the national kindergarten conference, presenters used MRI's to show the difference in brain activity when lessons are taught with and without music. I will not soon be forgetting the remarkable visualization of neural language and learning pathways being lit up by musical learning.
Since I am not instrumentally talented, I hope you will help me open the doors of musical learning to my students through these wonderful CDs by talented and insightful teachers and musicians. You can help light up my students' brains!
