This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Reading is a skill that my students need to be successful in life. This project encourages them to become life-long READERS by showing them a new, fun way to read.
To supplement a previously funded project, these materials will help students utilize their new karaoke machine to increase fluency.
My students are ambitious mix of seventh graders (including several English language learners and students with special needs) who are sick and tired of the monotony of reading they have come to expect from a lifetime of public education.
I want them to see that reading can be fun, and we read more than we think!
By singing, students not only increasing their sight word knowledge and fluency, but they are pairing those words to a tune, which helps with their retention. With the funding of this project, the students will be able to sing along to new and old songs, all while learning and having fun :)
My Project
The materials I am requesting are karaoke CDs to use in our new karaoke machine to support fluency, and a few percussion instruments to help encourage the students to participate. The CDs will give the students a variety of music to choose from, in addition to exposing them to different music genres and time periods, other than their own preference! To increase enthusiasm and promote the interest and want to use this machine to read, percussion instruments will allow the individual, group, or class to support and encourage our readers/singers.
These materials I am requesting will allow my students to be able to make ample use of their karaoke machine (funded by DonorsChoose, of course!) These materials will encourage participation, offer more song choices, and opportunity for other musical outlet participation.
This project greatly encourages student participation in reading to improve fluency & sight word knowledge.
With practice, the students' reading abilities will improve, & this will have a direct affect on their other skills such as reading comprehension & writing. All these skills are so very important in life, & this project will help to them because they are all linked to each other, no skill stands alone. This project supports literacy in a way different from traditional reading practices.
