This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a teacher in a low-income school district, I want to provide all I can for my students to have the most memorable educational experience. Our students come from very diverse backgrounds. We have over 1000 students in our school. Over 80% of them are receiving free or reduced-price lunches daily. Over half of the student body is Latino and we have an extremely large ESL population. Over 35% of my students are classified as special needs. The students who attend my school are hard-working. Even though most of our students come from economically deprived households, this does not stop them from giving their best in my classroom.

My students are such hard workers and caring children.

I am so lucky to be their teacher. I am proud of all they have achieved. Even though they do not have much, they have big hearts and have an amazing work ethic! They also want to help and contribute to our community and society! They want to learn more so they can give back more. I want to help them do that.

My Project

I love to practice self care with my students. These items are for our monthly projects I'm calling the Science of SELf Care club. The science of self care will also be followed by yoga and meditation and a healthy snack. That's where this project comes in.

Singing bowls promote deep relaxing, helps support social emotional learning, reduces stress and anxiety, activates the parasympathetic nervous system, aids the immune system, balances the chakras, improves circulation and blood flow, lowers blood pressure and anger and increases emotional and mental clarity.

Taking care of yourself is important and I would like to show students a natural way to care for themselves.

In the first month I focused on our teeth and taking care of our mouth. I explained why flossing is important, what tongue scraping does, the ayurvedic reasons for oil pulling, the whitening power of baking soda/hydrogen peroxide - plus explanations on what people used prior to the invention of toothpaste by Colgate in 1873. Each student got a new toothbrush, a container of their homemade toothpaste, a tongue scraper and floss.

Now, entering the second month, I would like to focus on our faces and alternate ways to wash them. We would exfoliate with oatmeal or almond meal, use cucumbers to cool the skin, turmeric and egg whites for face masks and steam. That's where this project comes in. I want to use the singing bowls to guide their meditation while face masks dry.
