My Students
A major goal in education today is STEM and that begins with a good, solid math background. We are beginning to use Singapore Math in our classroom. Singapore Math teaches concepts using a concrete - pictorial - abstract learning progression to anchor learning in real-world, hands-on experience.
I teach a wonderful class of 25 third graders.
They are excited, energetic and enthusiastic. My students love hands-on, creative projects, that provide for a wide range of learning experiences across the curriculum. Due to a busy academic schedule, they are not allowed many hands-on projects. Using Play-Doh, along with Singapore Math, will give them this opportunity. Using Play-Doh as a math manipulative will allow students to acquire math skills while addressing their multiple learning styles.
My Project
I am requesting 2 Singapore Math Word Problem workbooks, 2 packs of PlayDoh, and 1 pack of folders to help them solve math problems.
Singapore math requires children to understand how something works, like multiplication. But they are also going to understand why multiplication works. Singapore Math relies heavily on visualization and modeling. Using Play-Doh to visualize and model math concepts will help my students understand third-grade math standards.
Using Singapore Math and Play-Doh as a math manipulative will allow my students to work in groups, learning leadership, cooperation and other social skills. It also provides a safe environment for English-Language learners to acquire language skills.
Teaching math using Singapore Math workbooks and Play-Doh will truly enhance the teaching of math in my classroom.
Students will have the opportunity to master Common Core math standards using these tools. Thank you for your support.
