My first grade students are growing and learning in our small, tight knit, school community, in a busy urban city. They are dreamers, thinkers, talkers, and questioners. They are mini inspirations to themselves and others around them, even if they don't know it yet. They are budding ambassadors, world travelers, scientists, entrepreneurs, teachers... They are our future and I want to give them a great start to their long successful career. Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy is a designated low income pubic school and focused on social justice and community responsibility.
My Project
"Sing, Spell, Read & Write is a phonics-based program that uses a 36-step program of carefully sequenced steps to teach reading, writing, and spelling. Delivering explicit phonics instruction via a multi-sensory approach, Sing, Spell, Read & Write reaches every avenue to the brain and addresses every student's learning style."
The curriculum focuses on the language as a whole while making learning exciting and fun.
It covers Stem requirements, using both site reading and phonic techniques, with catchy songs and full color storybook readers. The focus is on reading, comprehension, spelling, beginning grammar, vocabulary, and handwriting.
Part 2 aims to fund two sets of these engaging, full-color, phonetic, storybook readers. In all my years of teaching, this is the one set of books I have found that inspires my students and accelerates their learning process.
The goal is to eventually have a set of books for each of our 22 students as well as one for the teacher. It’s important to foster a feeling of autonomy and pride in learning to read and write and having their own books to focus on will help support that.
In addition to the storybook readers, I have requested over-the-chair storage pockets to help my students organize their many books and learning materials. This simple fix will make a big change for my classroom and my students!
