My Students
Situated in a rural, high poverty area, my school engages learners in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. We are a positive behavior support school and strive to give our students the best opportunities available to create safe, kind, respectful, responsible learners.
Most of my students do not have access to instruments at home and get most of their music experience in my classroom.
Cultural centers and concert halls are more than an hour away and are often too expensive for students' families. These factors make what happens in music class even more important.
My Project
Reading is important in all content areas. In music class, we don't always have a chance to read together as a class, but students regularly have a chance to visit the music library as part of their month workstation rotations. This allows students to pursue their own musical interests with the books I have on hand. At other times the books will be used for rhythmic activities and dramatic interpretations with music. Imagine making stories come alive with drums, ukuleles and dancing with scarves. Imagine playing world instruments to add sound effects to stories read aloud. Imagine practicing fluency with a story that is actually lyrics to a song we have already learned in class.
Our classroom library is in need of books about musicians, biographies and books that include musicians and children of diverse backgrounds.
Living in a small, rural town that is not very diverse, these books will provide a glimpse of the larger world that we live in. Learning about musicians and their experiences helps students connect to people that lived or are living lives very different from their own.
