Hurricane Katrina has affected everyone in this region to varying degrees. Its fury forced over eight feet of water to completely destroy my school. I lost everything that I have created, purchased, or received during the entire course of my teaching career. It has been painful trying to rebuild my classroom. Sometimes I will look for things that are no longer there. I'll want to read a book then remember I lost it in the storm. Although I have been moved to another school in the district, I am trying to always find new things for my children that help make up for what I lost.
I currently teach 20 transitional first grade students. These are students that have completed kindergarten, but still need an extra year of time to help them developmentally prepare for first grade. We are currently teaching our students to comprehend what they read through a study of the book "Reading With Meaning." This book and its author suggest using song books for the first six weeks of school, using a different song book each day. Each book will then be added into a basket that the children can read from. These books are songs the children are already familiar with, such as "Little Rabbit Foo Foo" and "Do You Know the Muffin Man?". This gives the children a sense of pride and accomplishment when they are able to read the song book.
My students would benefit from using these song books throughout the entire school year. I currently have no song books, as so many books were destroyed in Katrina. This proposal would provide me with enough books to teach a new one each day for the first 26 days of school. Thank you so much for your kind consideration!
