In an effort to extend our learning about organs and organ systems, I want my students to be able to dissect rats and cow eyes. I am 49 years old and one of the few vivid memories I have of my own school experience is from when I dissected a fish. I instantly became interested in biology!
I teach science to about 100 students in Arkansas.
Many of our students are from outlying rural areas. My students love science when they can see how it relates to their own lives, and through this project I hope to be able to help them understand more about their own bodies.
My Project
My students need rats and cow eyes to dissect and two rat dissection models. Although rats and cows are very different from humans, there are also many similarities. While dissecting the cow eyes, my students will get to see observe first hand the structure and function of a real eye. While dissecting the rats, they will go beyond examining a single organ and will get to observe organs within systems. We will compare the body systems of the rats to human body systems. If there are any students who are opposed to dissecting animals, they will be able to use the dissection models for their investigations.
I want my students to have the same memorable and valuable experience I had as a younger student.
I could never afford to do this without your help. This project could be the inspiration that will help some of my students become future doctors or veterinarians! At the very least, they will have a greater understanding of their own bodies.
