My students need 6 hand-crank generators, alligator clips, miniature light bulbs, and a Circuit Kit Jr. to complete some classroom kits for studying electricity.
Science can be so fascinating, and electricity is one of the coolest things to experience. I have the beginnings of some wonderful electricity kits that I have been using with my students, but some of the supplies in the kit need to be replaced due to being completely worn out!
I teach general science to about 100 seventh grade students at a small school in Arkansas.
Many of them are from the farming country near our school. We have not had the luxury of having a real laboratory to use in the past, which has made it challenging to provide some of the hands-on activities that are so critical in science. Even so, I do all I can to give them these experiences.
My Project
It seems that, at the beginning of our unit on electricity, most of my students know nothing about electricity and how it works. They are fascinated when they can create a circuit that lights a bulb, something that they have been exposed to all of their lives, but never understood. The students will use these supplies, such as alligator clips to snap circuits and miniature lamps to create series and parallel circuits. They will also experiment with different sources of electricity.
By gaining a basic understanding of electricity, how it works, and how it is produced, my students will then be able to better understand the importance of finding alternate ways to create electricity, and why we need to conserve electricity.
