This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our middle school band program is 9 years old and continuing to build. We now have an established band program but require financial support to continue what we started. Our school is located 7 miles from downtown Houston. We are asking for help in continuing to offer a quality band program to this community, one “in tune” with successful band programs in surrounding school districts especially the programs in more affluent areas. Every child deserves the opportunity to a quality music education and to be a part of a quality band program.
My Project
What a difference a simple binder can make. The majority of our students come from homes with limited means. With recent floods, budgets are exceptionally tight both at school and at home. A school issued binder is one less thing to worry about for struggling households. A band binder will allow us to teach our kids to stay organized, learn structure, and professionalism.
Inner-city kids are regular kids that often don’t know what a great big world is out there.
Band might be the reason some of our students seek to further their education and for others, the only reason they stay in school. Many will learn a work ethic, camaraderie, and leadership they will take with them into adulthood and the workplace. We will continue to try our best to offer our band students the most complete music education possible.
