Help me give my students materials for hands-on science experiments, maps to help them learn the geography of their state, and seeds for our classroom garden.

My Project

Science is engaging and exciting for children of all ages! Help me bring some important concepts alive with hands-on activities for student-centered learning about convection currents, how heat impacts dissolution of substances, chemical reactions, building structures and the shapes that are most stable, etc.

Students will learn about scientific concepts that can then be applied to our world environment.

They will see how warm water moves faster than cold water (when we use different temperatures of water to show the dissolution). We will then look at our globes and talk about how warm water vs. colder water can impact ocean circulation and wind patterns and contribute to the weather patterns we see on our island. We will use our maps to learn about the leeward side and windward side of islands, and how this relates to ocean currents.

We will also be starting our classroom garden with easy to grow, quick sprouting seeds. We will talk about how growing food locally reduces our resource impact on the environment by reducing the amount of miles that food needs to travel. We will look at our globes and see how much of our produce travels thousands of miles before it reaches our stores. We will talk about how this excessive traveling can heat up our world and change the current wind and water currents that travel to our island. This will tie back to our original science lessons at the start of this project.
