I teach Language Arts and Speech to Deaf and hard of hearing Pre-K through Middle School age students in the poor inner city. Most students have language skills and social pragmatics that are extremely impaired and/or extremely delayed.

Language is best learned in a creative, high interest hands-on environment. My students are from a very high-need area. Most students do not get the opportunity to venture into the community much and participate in functional daily activities such as shopping, making choices or organizing an activity, to gain background knowledge from which to build language. These students need functional activities that promote communicative independence and good reasoning and communication skills. Being able to organize, buy and sell different items through a play market would help with reasoning, organizational, receptive and expressive language, speech, social and math language skills.

I do not have materials that allow us to "set up" a shop and become future entrepreneurs with functional communication skills within the Deaf or hearing communities. A "market" would serve to help kids practice their communication and reasoning skills while they buy and sell items, by re-creating a real functional life skill.

This gift would allow kids to practice skills that would benefit them a lifetime. Skills such as social greeting, turn taking, being polite, taking turns, counting, naming and making choices while having fun learning to do it.
