My Students

My high school is an inner city public 4–year high school located in the Little Village neighborhood on the South est side of Chicago, Illinois, United States. Our school is part of the Chicago Public Schools district and is managed by the Academy for Urban School Leadership.

Our High School Campus is a public high school located in the South Lawndale neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois.

The campus contains four autonomous small schools with some shared facilities. LVLHS has a unique campus design that reflects its original inception from a hunger strike in 2001. In 2001, 14 parents and grandparents staged a 19-day hunger strike to urge politicians to fulfill promises to build a high school in the child and adolescent dense Little Village neighborhood

Each of the four schools within the campus has its own particular focus: the Multicultural Academy of Scholarship High School; the Infinity Math, Science and Technology High School aims to prepare students for jobs requiring strong math, science and technological skills; the World Language High School promotes bilingualism, multiculturalism, and learning through the world’s languages; and the Social Justice High School's curriculum emphasizes the struggle for social justice.

My Project

I teach in an Urban school where a fourth of the student population have IEPs with various learning and behavioral difficulties. To add to their agony of having learning difficulties, COVID came through. During this challenging period with COVID on one side and remote learning on the other, my students have enough in their plates.

During the Remote learning period during Spring, one of the main challenges I noticed was the difficulty of not being able to get fast internet access as well as noise-canceling headphones.

Internet access was taken care of by the district. But unfortunately they were not able to provide the students with noise-canceling headphones. Most of my students live in multi-generational and over-crowded houses. To avoid background noise, some of them went to nearby parks during google class meet times. Please help each of these student get headphones, so that they are able to study from home without needing to leave home and go to the park to study.
