Silence of the FLUTES!

We need four new flutes to help our blossoming sixth grade musicians!

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Schecter's classroom raised $2,324

About My Students

This project was created by the 8A section of my symphonic band. Not only are my flute players strong players, but they are fantastic leaders. Two of the students who worked on this project, Sarah and Monica regularly give up their lunch periods to tutor flute students in the lower grades.

Many of our flutes are falling apart due to age and overuse. The eighth graders are fortunate enough to use our better instruments. The students in grades six and seven use the older ones. While my eighth graders were tutoring my sixth grade beginning flute students, they constantly asked me to check the students' instruments. In nearly every case we discovered that the beginners were struggling due to the condition of their flutes. The eighth graders decided that this project would be extremely beneficial to the future of the music program because it would help my new beginners to be successful.

In band class, the students learn to read the language of music. Not only do they learn to play and perform on their instruments, but we incorporate discussions, evaluative and persuasive writing, academic vocabulary and interdisciplinary connections. Like all student-led projects, our work on this grant has fostered an incredible sense of teamwork among the band students. In addition they are learning to empathize. The instruments that we hope to receive from this project will not benefit the eighth graders who did all of the writing! My older students see helping the sixth graders as a means of keeping our band program alive. They are passionate about supporting their younger counterparts and that makes me incredibly proud!

In Their Own Words

The pads under the keys in many of our flutes are rotten. Some have even grown mold! This makes it difficult to play. The sound is really airy and some notes don't even come out at all. This causes danger and frustration to anyone trying to learn the flute. If we were to have new flutes, our sixth and seventh graders would be able to learn on fully functional instruments. It would be great to get these flutes because we will be able to play wonderful music as a whole ensemble.

We will make this project happen by asking friends and family members to donate. We could also ask administration to announce the grant on the morning announcements. In addition, there could be a jar in the main office for donations. Finally with the use of modern technology, including social media, we will be able to spread the word of our great need for flutes.

This project is important because it will fulfill the dreams of many future flute players who will have the ability to learn on a working instrument. Instead of the flutes sounding disgusting, they'll sound majestic and beautiful. Flutes are often used in melody/countermelody parts of a piece of music. The band can't play to its potential without good sounding flutes. New flutes would encourage struggling players to persevere and stay in this most glorious pastime.
