Significant Support Needs Students Need Sensory-Rich Materials
Help me give my students with vision impairments, a light panel, and blocks that we can fill with sound-producing items and visually interesting objects so they may learn how to request, describe and label through fulfilling play.
The students of our Significant Supports Needs Program are in need of purposeful and educational materials that cater to their specific abilities, not disabilities. Impaired vision and hearing, challenges in mobility and physical limitations require a heightened level of engagement than just paper and pencil activities.
Our students ranging from Kindergarten through 6th grade, require unique materials that highlight or require more emphasis on developmental play and sensory-rich experiences much more than the neurotypical learner.
Our students will benefit from activities that promote social interaction, motor development, problem-solving and turn-taking elicited through play. We are proud our program continues to grow and draws families from nearby communities. As our students' needs evolve and grow, our materials need to evolve and grow with them.
My Project
The tunnel can work on spatial concepts, following multi-step directions and cooperation. The sound magnets encourage matching, wrist and finger usage. The blocks not only work on shapes, sizes, colors, and textures but manipulation, stacking, turn-taking, spatial directions, and hand functioning. The money pads tie in with our "store" and counting coins and bills.
Additionally, the light panel can enhance the reading experiences of our visually impaired students using an adapted book on top.
With the addition of an overlay and chalk markers, tracing and strokes increase the engagement of a reluctant writer. We can show growth through sensory-based play.
