My Students
My loves are first graders in a large urban district. They work hard, against pretty incredible challenges, to learn to read, write, explore, and love math! As inclusion students, these children have special learning needs or are compassionate, kind models for children who do. This environment brings out the best in these six and seven year olds, but they need all the help they can get in maintaining this tall task through the school year in a rigorous academic environment!
My Project
Snapwords are flashcards that use pictures to write out sight words. Sight words can not be sounded out, and are really tricky for visual learners to remember. The illustrations on these cards are very effective at helping kids "solve" sight words until they can read them by sight.
This year I have lots of visual learners.
These children have worked incredibly hard all year learning to blend sounds and use pictures to read texts. The sight words are beginning to make veritable mine fields for my struggling readers. This one tool could be the difference between a lifelong love of books and struggle through their academic career.
