My students need ways to access sight words with the use of stampers, letters, dotters, and activities to help them learn to read and write words in various ways.

My Students
George Evans said, "Every student can learn, just not on the same day, or in the same way". Our class of 13 students learn in 13 different ways and the challenge I face in teaching them is providing different ways to expose them to sight word materials for IEP goals and provide writing alternatives.
Our class of 13 students are as diverse in their backgrounds as they are in their disabilities and learning styles.
Each student is considered severely disabled with co occurring disabilities including cognitive, behavioral, and gross and fine motor challenges. We have students with Down Syndrome, Autism, Spina Bifida, Cerebral Palsy, Joubert Syndrome, and general learning disabilities. Most students are at a preschool to kindergarten level academically. We come from a very diverse cultural area so we have 75% of our class with English as a second language, with Spanish being our most prevalent language. We are also in a Title One school so economic challenges are prevalent and our school has a high rate of students living in poverty. With all of the diversity, we have lots of things in common including the right and desire to learn skills just like our non disabled peers. We all love movement, laughter, fun, and the success of hard work and a job well done.
My Project
These items will help my students to access sight words through direct activities and alternative means of providing responses. We have many worksheets in class for sight word development and the students love them, however, with our fine motor limitations we can't always do them. The magnetic letters, art dot makers, and stamp materials will help us to have 3 ways to demonstrate identification and spelling of sight words without needing a traditional pencil, which 50% of us can not currently use. The other sight word activities such as sight word puzzles, the sight word switch center, and the sight word sentence builders will increase independent practice of previously taught words to help in the addition of more time for teachers to work one on one with each student. One on one time is critical for my students' learning, but we want all of the students engaged in small group activities as well. The activities listed will help students to be engaged at a higher rate.
All students have a basic educational right to access an education appropriate at their level.
This project will increase the amount of time my students are engaged in their IEP goals of learning basic sight words. It will change our class to provide more one on one time as well as more sight word based individual and group practice. All students will be able to complete some form of worksheet, which they can take home and show to their parents just like their non disabled peers do every day.
