This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are active learners in need of interactive reading intervention sessions. Many of my students come from backgrounds where literacy doesn't take the forefront in their every day lives. My job as a Pre-K teacher is to engage and captivate them in our everyday language.

Our school is located in a culturally diverse neighborhood in the Bronx, New York.

Our school is about 70% Hispanics, 30% ELLs, and 90% low income. I have 18 students who come in every morning with bright smiles and are eager to learn, sing, dance and play. This project will be used for my students whom are attending a school setting for the first time ever. The students coming into our school are mostly bilingual with little to no English language. We are currently struggling with an increased number of students that are coming into school without basic literacy skills, such as letter recognition, letter sounds and phonological awareness.

My Project

I am faced with the challenge of engaging my students in all aspects of learning through interactive intervention conferences. I believe students best learn and build reading skills through a combination of creative activities and hands on activities, which includes reading fluency, phonemic awareness, phonics and sight word practice, and comprehension review. In order to keep my students engaged and excited throughout the year, I will use interactive and creative materials such as clay; play dough, stamps, paints, puzzles, letter blocks, games, sand, water, white boards, as well as technology to offer variety of ways for learning. The resources and materials I have asked for in this project would enable my continued teaching commitment to an intricate approach to learning reading, specifically sight word recognition. My students need sight word puzzles, building letter puzzles, supplies for art, games to build gross motor skills and critical thinking, and so much more.

Because many of my students are bilingual with little to no English, these resources will be their only exposure to the English language.

Their only exposure is often simply in school. With your donation, my students will be able to play games to practice strengthen their phonemic awareness,learn about print and how it works, identify letters by name and shape, identify separate sounds in spoken language, connect single letters with the sounds they make to make a word and much more.
