My Project

I recently completed a training for middle school Earth science teachers where we analyzed sand collected from multiple places around the state. Who knew how different sand particles could be? Sand depends on the parent material rock, what caused it to weather and erode, and can be all different sizes. This will be our introductory to science unit at the beginning of the year.

This will be a great opportunity for students to use the sieves and our new hand-made iPad microscopes and practice the science and engineering practices that will be used in the next 6 years of their science education.

Students, families, and staff have been asked to bring in samples of sand from places they visited over the summer. I will collect all the samples and create an ArcGIS story map where we will be able to look at pictures, maps, and landforms of the area to be able to tell the story about where the sand came from. This will also be a great way to start the year with low-stakes and high-interest content!
