My Students

All of my students are currently in the hospital as a result of illness or injury. They are attending school bedside while receiving medical care and various treatments. The students are often distracted from learning because of pain, medication, sadness and anger. The children in my class are from New York and the surrounding areas. We also accept and treat children from other states and from out of this county.

My students, four to twenty-one years of age, are currently hospitalized for a variety of childhood diseases and accidents.

They receive medical and educational intervention daily while in the hospital. It is our goal to reunite students with their friends, families and home district school classmates. My kids are diagnosed with diabetes, physical delays, cognitive and social delays as a result of accidents and illness. Students have a wide range of challenges which are a result of current illness and new life altering diagnosis.

I work for NYC DOE Hospital Schools which supports teachers in thirty-eight NYC Hospitals. My students are warriors and they fight the fight everyday, pushing past the pain. My students are often newly diagnosed with life threatening diseases such as diabetes and seizure disorders.

My Project

Sickle cell disease, an inherited blood disorder, most commonly causes acute, severe, recurrent painful episodes. Children with sickle cell disease are also at increased risk for stroke and chronic problems, such as kidney and lung disease. Thousands of children are effected each year by sickle cell High rates of hospital readmissions are the norm with sickle cell patients. Children often miss a large amount of school due to the chronic reoccurring hospitalizations.

Characters in a story can often become a patient's best friend and confidant while in the hospital.

Children are often scared and nervous when they come to a hospital. Introducing books with characters who are going through similar medical concerns as the students is a way to reduce the fear of the unknown. As the patients/students read about the positive outcomes of the story characters, they can become more at ease feeling they are not alone and isolated.

Books open up communication and help students discuss the possible procedures and outcomes.

We are trying to establish a child centered medical library. This project is for books about Sickle cell disease and minor surgeries. Children with sickle cell are chronic with the visits to the hospital. Hospital School programs make it possible for students to continue to address all academic needs with their hospital school teacher. This library will serve as a gateway to establishing an open caring relationship between student and teacher. We believe in building lifelong learners one book at a time.
