Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Third grade can be very frustrating and disengaging if you cannot read. Research shows that if students cannot read by the end of the third grade their chances of dropping out of high school are terribly high. It is my greatest mission to have all 3rd graders reading proficiently.
My students are very much in need.
Many live in single parent homes or with grandparents. Some are in foster homes and others don't have a stable place to live in. They come to school daily and a majority qualify for government lunch.
They attend a public school that is in the middle of factories and just a block away from the train tracks. My students face many struggles on a daily basis and yet come to school eager to learn and please their teacher. Many of the students are one year or more behind in reading. Most of my students do not get support from home because parents speak a language other than English.
My Project
My students need guided reading books to receive instruction at their particular reading level. Having guided reading books will serve in multiple ways. First, the instruction is targeted for the needs of the individual student. The teacher can use the books at the student's instructional level to teach new skills or to review ones previously taught.
Students can also use books at their independent level to read at home or during universal access time. Having books at a student's independent level eliminates frustration and helps with comprehension.
Please help us acquire the necessary books to help students at their independent reading levels.
Targeting students' reading needs is essential if we want them to make progress towards reaching grade level reading proficiency. It is crucial that they leave the third grade reading proficiently. Please help my students be successful readers.
