My Students
"Show your work" is a phrase my students hear me tell them over and over again. But what if they could actually show their work to the entire class, instead of just me? If we had a document camera the students would be able to show everyone their problem solving process.
My students are an amazing group of people who bring a great deal of enthusiasm to the classroom.
We do a lot of group work in class, and they love sharing their ideas with one another. They are a very supportive group of kids who appreciate each other in a way that is rare among high school kids.
I teach in a large urban district in Massachusetts, and most of these students come from low income homes and do not have the resources to buy many of the materials they need in class. They are always very appreciative of any donations given to them.
My Project
In math class, the students are always working to solve challenging problems. This happens individually, in small groups, and as a whole class. The students often have different approaches to problems and working together really benefits them. The document camera will allow students to show exactly what they did to the whole class. They will be able to show any diagrams they drew, the steps they took and their final answer. This will help students in many ways. First off it will help them articulate their thought process. It will give them more reason to show all of their work. It will allow them to see alternative ways to solve a problem. It will help them diagnose mistakes made along the way. It will help build the problem solving process by giving them a really great way to share their work and ultimately become even better at it.
This document camera will enhance the students overall experience. It will hook up to an LCD projector that I already have access to in my school.
We have very limited technology at school.
I currently use an overhead projector that is duct-taped together. This piece of technology will allow the students and me to do so much more in the classroom. They are a wonderful and deserving group of kids and I know they will greatly appreciate this gift.
