Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a third grade teacher I want to know what my students have learned. They can tell me about it or write about it, but it is even better when they show me what they have learned. This project aims to help my students to demonstrate what they know about science, social studies and language arts by creating drawings and music.
I teach third grade in a primarily immigrant and working class neighborhood in southern California.
Most of my students are learning English as a second language, a couple of them are receiving special education services, and ALL of them love to learn.
With this project my students will be able to show what they know in multiple content areas. In science they will be able to create movie projects that demonstrate the properties of the three states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas. In social studies they will act out and film each other role playing the three branches of government. In language arts they will be able to write and produce short movies on teamwork, one of our themes.
I currently have my students show what they know in different subject areas by creating iMovie projects on the computer. Students take pictures with a digital camera, draw pictures by hand and scan them on a scanner, record video clips on a video camera, and record audio on an iPod Touch. They take their audio and video content to the computer to create iMovie projects. In the past my third graders have created projects in social studies, science, and various language arts themes.
My Project
Now I would like to be able to streamline and simplify this process for the students using an iPad. With the iPad students will be able to take their own still pictures and videos using the built-in camera. Artists such as David Hockney use the iPad to create brilliant works of art, and my students will be able to create their own works using drawing apps available on the iPad.
With GarageBand and the built-in microphone my third graders will be able to record their own audio and musical tracks. Then when all these pieces are complete my students can create iMovie projects right on the iPad. The iPad can take the place of the still camera, video camera, scanner, voice recorder, and desktop computer. I am requesting five iPads so that multiple students can work on their projects simultaneously. I am also requesting Smart Covers to protect the iPads and styluses to help students with their drawings. Finally I am requesting a $100 iTunes gift card to purchase these creative apps.
My students live in a working class neighborhood, but they are exposed to technology through their home and classroom computers, video game systems, and parents' smartphones.
They need to continue to be exposed to 21st century learning tools, and this project with the requested iPads and accessories will provide them with that experience, while also allowing students to use their artistic abilities to create original drawings and musical compositions. Thank you.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
