My students need a hardcover bookbinding kits for their students produced science books.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Reeves's classroom raised $209
This project is fully funded
I teach science in a K-8 math and science academy located in a large urban area in Illinois. The school has 95% of the students receiving free or reduced price lunch.
Science encompasses more than the understanding that can be measured on a written test. To show their true understanding of a topic, I have students produce a trade book on a topic of science we studied in a quarter. For example, the topic was Magnetism and Electricity and one student wrote and illustrated a book describing how to make and use an electromagnet. This assignment requires the student to use what s/he has learned about electricity, and clearly and succinctly describe that knowledge. Each quarter's topic of study provides the theme for that quarter's book. This performance assessment more clearly demonstrates a student's understanding than a written test does.
Some of the books students have written are quite good but covers made of construction paper don't last long. Other students need a bit more persuasion to really produce a good product. We need hardcover bookbinding kits so students will be able to "publish" a real book (writing, editing, layout, illustration and binding), thus combining science and language arts. These books can then be placed in our school library for other children to read and be inspired by.
Having satisfaction in one's work is always important but a glossy covered book in a school or classroom library, with their name typed on it, and their own work inside for others to read intensifies that feeling to pride in themselves and their accomplishment. Your donation will help these hard working children reach for the stars, and maybe catch one. Thanks.
