My Students

Our classroom has a diverse student population. My goal is to provide all levels of students with the support they need. I also strive to enrich the learning of our gifted students.

My students come from a high poverty area.

Their experiences are so very limited; many of them have never even left our town.

Parents are working hard to provide for them. Our school is doing everything it can to meet our students needs but money is tight all over and corners are cut...unfortunately, this means limited budgets.

My Project

A high quality document camera is an essential tool for modeling the writing process.

Students struggle to create something when they have only been told how to do it. It is crucial for them to see this skill happening in REAL time right before their eyes.

A document camera makes modeling writing simple because it is instantaneous and in REAL TIME. Visibly writing on the same paper the students are writing on is very important.

Smartboards are amazing tools; however, writing on a smartboard can distort my writing. As a result, my students don't quite get a clear picture of writing, correct letter formation, conventions, etc... I am able to model correct paragraphing, handwriting, and much more! I am also able to let my students see me struggle with my own thinking and writing trials and errors. This is a huge confidence builder for them when they realize even their teacher faces writing challenges. Student performance and understanding of writing is significantly increased when they see the process modeled step by step. A high quality document camera will also allow me to zoom in and focus on specific revision and editing techniques.

Standardized testing is putting more and more pressure on students. With this document camera, modeling precise testing and thinking strategies for editing and revising will better help prepare my students in writing and testing.

Lastly, and most importantly the document camera turns the students into the teacher. Students are able to share their writing with other students. It is incredibly powerful for them to see a successful writer, their own age! Then they think, "Hey, if that 4th grader can do this, so can I!"
