This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The 2014-2015 school year has brought me students who are full of life. Keeping these spirited 5th graders ON task has been a challenge, however our saving grace have been white boards. Math is not our favorite subject, yet writing out our challenging problems as a team is the key to success.
My students represent Thailand, Mexico, Haiti, and Puerto Rico.
Over 90% of these children are living in poverty. Their parents work 2 or 3 jobs if they can find it while other parents are absent from their child's life. Behavior is a challenge as many have grown to believe they are unintelligent and playing the role of the bully is cool. Behind their tough expressions are hearts of gold. They long to be loved and believed in. Their school is a warm community, however struggles with funding. Academically over half are not reading on grade level, and they are dependent on the school to change their world.
My Project
A few months ago our class was given 5 Chromebooks. Yay! The headphones are going to replace the over used/broken headphones the students can continue to use their various educational programs on the Chromebooks.
During Math the students use white boards to work out their problems. We are in desperate need of washable markers for the students to continue to use the white boards.
The headphones will continue to help the students in their tasks on the computers.
Over half of my students are boys and the white board tool helps keep frustrations down and allows for success. Many of the students are already behind in Math. Adding new material is a challenge, as the student continue to feel behind. White boards are a "fun" way for the student to write out their equations, share with a friend, and allows me to see their knowledge without embarrassing them.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
