I want to bring 21st Century skills into the kindergarten writing program. My children are so creative and curious and I want to channel that spark and ignite their love of technology AND writing for the rest of their lives.
I have 21 4 and 5 year old students in my class.
The overwhelming majority of families served by my school are considered socioeconomically disadvantaged. At least half of my class does not speak English as a native language. Yet, the families are very supportive of their children's education and the students themselves come to my class with a natural curiosity and hopefulness that is truly inspiring.
My Project
I am requesting a basic digital camera that will be easy for little hands to operate. The memory card and soft case will help me teach responsibility and preventative care for this type of technology. The printer and ink refills will allow the students' ideas and creativity to come to life. Students will use the camera to illustrate stories and nonfiction reports that they will work on with partners or individually. Students will collaborate on storyline and photos to illustrate their books or papers. I envision growth in the areas of cooperation, sharing, delegating, and teamwork; all powerful skills that will carry on throughout their lives. The engagement in the writing process both with writing conventions and creative content will blossom.
College professors and work supervisors talk about how our graduating seniors lack basic writing skills.
I want to change that legacy by starting in Kindergarten to foster a love of writing and encourage students to think beyond crayons and paper.
