My project needs the "Eyewitness Video Series:Complete Set" that will allow students to see and better understand the concepts that they learn about in class.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a third grade teacher at a school that is located in a lower socioeconomic area. My school is a Title 1 school, which means that the school receives aid from the government. This aid includes, but is not limited to, a free lunch program for all students. The school is currently a Program Improvement school. This means that the school has been designated as "low performing" within our district. Despite the school's current circumstances, I consider my students to be full of potential and very eager to learn. They just need the right resources and materials to help them meet their full potential.
Every day teachers like me work hard to teach students about the world around them. We use words to describe, textbooks to supply factual information, and pictures to create visual images of things that our students do not encounter in their own environments. Students living in the inner-city have no concept of certain animals, plants, or even other cultures. During my years of teaching I have noticed that more and more students are visual learners. It is not enough to tell them about the world around them. It is not enough to show them pictures. Students need to be able to SEE the wonder of the natural world around them to fully comprehend how it works.
My school's video collection is comprised mainly of Disney cartoons, and other fictional movies that have been donated by teachers or parents. Though the students love theses types of movies, they are not educational, and they do not support the learning that goes on in the classroom. The "Eyewitness Video Series: Complete Set" I have requested will make the concepts, animals, historic events, cultures, and countries that we read about in class real and much more memorable for my students. The video library that you donate will benefit the students in my class (and at my school) by adding to their knowledge base. They will be able to see the animals of the rain forest in their natural habitat, or see how solar energy is converted to chemical energy in plants. These videos will help support traditional teaching methods and make every lesson more memorable for the students. This will ultimately result in higher test scores!
Teachers like me will continue to utilize every resource at hand to ensure that our students meet their maximum potential, but we can’t do it alone. We need the generosity of donors like you to help us create dynamic learning opportunities. If you choose to fund this project, you will be literally taking the content off of the pages of books and firmly planting it in the minds of my students.
Thank you.
