Our students love to learn new things! Our school is for students with special needs who, because of severe emotional and behavioral issues, have not been able to learn successfully at their regular schools. They learn a little bit differently, and we are able to accommodate their differences and keep them in school and in class!
Our school provides a safe place where students can make mistakes, learn coping skills and master problem-solving strategies while continuing to be exposed to the district-wide academic curriculum.
Instead of being suspended or removed from the learning environment for extended parts of the day, our daily goal is to keep students in the learning environment.
My Project
My students need Puppets Farm+ Wild Animals Set and a puppet show theatre to put on shows and express themselves through dramatic play! Our students love dramatic play - they love to act. They are not so great at remembering lines! But, that is OK - because when they become puppet masters they will have their lines to read and can focus on intonation, expression, and movement! We are going to find stories that teach a lesson in kindness and other expressions of emotions that the students can perform in a puppet show. With the selection of animal puppets we can begin our foray into puppeteering with selecting some appropriate Aesop's Fables to practice performing.
Next, we will start to collaborate on an original creation on the topic of how our emotions factor into our everyday routines.
Using puppets to talk about feelings will be very freeing for many of our students. This would be an excellent way for the students to become more educated on their particular emotional disabilities and to be able to educate others on their personal perceptions of the world around them. It will also be a magnificent way to get more students interested in writing, because it is not the favorite subject of many. However, knowing that their words will be read aloud and performed in front of an audience will be quite an incentive to put pen to paper for many of them.
