Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Bullying was a major topic at school last year. Things were happening outside of the classroom that were often done on social media that impacted my normally peaceful classroom. Because of this, I have made it my challenge to incorporate teaching empathy and kindness far more than I normally do in 6th-grade English. They must have compassion for one another so that all of them can thrive in middle school.

Empathy is widely understood as the ability to understand another person's emotions.

Empathy is taught by building a positive community. Spending one day a week sharing kindness goes a long way in building that positive community. I've chosen items that will allow each student to pick a kindness challenge each week to complete. Each student will pick something new to try out and spread kindness and then journal about the experience focusing on how that made them feel and reflect if it becomes easier to practice kindness with each week that we complete it. This journal will help me measure my students' success in understanding compassion towards those they spread kindness to.

Next, we will also complete a "shout out" each week so that students can compliment and share the amazing things they witness a classmate doing during the week. This allows them to focus on the contributions that everyone brings to the classroom, not just the people they already feel comfortable with. The shout-out cards will be given to the person and celebrated in the classroom.

Using these two strategies, students will be able to learn more about one another building a stronger community that empathizes with one another. They will be able to see the world from another's perspective, stand up for one another, and lower the amount of bullying that happens in and out of school.
