Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students want to be challenged, want deep reading experiences, want to be ready for college, but they are also experiencing early onset of Senioritis.

I am an English teacher and school librarian of a huge metropolitan high school in California.

I have been given the challenge of teaching a group of seniors who have been identified by the administration as "unmotivated, but bright". They come from the impoverished surrounding neighborhood and are, in most cases, the first in their families to graduate high school and apply for college.

My Project

I know that in order to prepare them for their academic journeys past high school, I need to bolster their literacy skills (while they may be verbally bright, they lack basic skills and critical / analytical thinking), expose them to classic literature, and provide them with challenging academic experiences. However, because most of them struggle with scholastic ambivalence and an aversion to concentrated mental work, I know that I need to be shrewd in what I put in front of them to read. Therefore, I am hoping that offering them short story experiences will appeal to their short attention spans and their reluctance to engage in long texts.

Thank you for your consideration in helping my students prepare for college.

I want them to be successful, and I know that in order to coax them into performing academic work, I must make the reading materials palatable and not daunting. I don't want to compromise depth and rigor so I aim to provide them with challenging texts in readable chunks. I can't help them if they won't do the work and offering them fluff won't enrich them. Hopefully, they will welcome these bite size classics.
