Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are in grades nine through twelve. We are a small, public school tucked away in the mountains. My students struggle with their emotions due to varying disabilities.
We practice Community Based Instruction (CBI).
CBI is educational instruction in naturally occurring community environments providing students real-life experiences. My students need intensive instruction in functional and daily living skills. We run a school-wide coffee shop where employability skills are learned through actual daily sales. They are responsible for completing their biweekly time cards.

Saving money teaches many life lessons.
I have a classroom store where students have the opportunity to buy snacks or other preferred items.
They earn their classroom money a variety of ways. Some work in the schools' coffee shop where they're responsible for clocking in/out, as well as calculating their time. Others earn money by completing assignments and/or exhibiting positive citizenship qualities, and/or working in our schools' cafeteria as needed.
I quadruple Amazon's price to meet my classroom cash's worth. The prices are in my "Figaro Bucks" currency. The wireless earbuds cost $160; the storm-trooper $36; the Iron Man mask $18; the guitar $400; the Little Debbie snacks $4; the beef jerky $6; the Sobe drinks $8.
Having these preferred items in the store creates a positive instructional atmosphere where the teacher and the student both win.
