My Project

Using STEM materials and a toy shopping cart, my students will engage in activities that foster empathy and understanding by seeing the world through the eyes of another person. For instance, they might simulate a shopping experience where they have to consider the needs and limitations of different characters, such as a person with disabilities or someone from a low-income background. This hands-on approach allows them to explore and empathize with diverse perspectives, helping them grasp the challenges and experiences of others. By designing and building solutions that address these characters' specific needs, students develop a deeper understanding of how different circumstances can affect daily life.

Additionally, stories of characters who alleviate suffering can serve as powerful examples, motivating students to contribute positively to their communities.

Pretend food activities, where students simulate situations involving food security, help them comprehend the importance of addressing hunger and other social issues. These activities encourage brainstorming and practical solutions, such as organizing food drives or volunteering, fostering a sense of responsibility and the drive to alleviate others' suffering through tangible actions.

To measure success in my students' understanding of compassion, I will use a combination of observational assessments, reflective journals, and project-based evaluations. Observational assessments during group activities will help me gauge how well students collaborate and consider each other's viewpoints. Reflective journals will allow students to express their thoughts and feelings about what they have learned regarding empathy and compassion. Finally, the effectiveness of their project-based solutions in addressing the needs of their simulated characters will provide tangible evidence of their ability to translate empathy into action. Together, these methods will provide a comprehensive view of their progress in understanding and practicing compassion.
