My Project
In my 6th grade math class, I aim to create a welcoming and supportive environment for immigrants, refugees, and English language learners (ELLs) through a project that provides custom team shirts. Many of these students face cultural and language barriers that can make school feel like a challenging place to navigate. By designing team shirts for them, I hope to foster a sense of unity and belonging within the classroom, helping students feel like an integral part of the group. The shirts will also promote teamwork during collaborative activities, encouraging students from diverse backgrounds to work together and support each other as they build relationships that extend beyond the classroom. This simple but effective project will help build self-confidence and ease social integration for these students.
The team shirts will also serve as a visual tool to help ELLs and newcomers better understand group roles during team-based learning.
Often, these students might struggle with instructions or feel unsure about their place within a larger classroom setting, but the shirts will provide a clear sense of belonging and identity within their respective teams. As we engage in various math challenges and collaborative problem-solving exercises, students will be more inclined to participate and feel less isolated. Ultimately, this project supports their emotional and social well-being, creating an inclusive learning environment where all students can thrive.
