Shiny Metal Dumplings

My Project

Remember the trend of turning aluminum foil into glossy balls several years ago? It shares similarities with a Japanese art form called "hikaru dorodango," or "shiny dumpling," which people shape mud and water into gleaming balls of dirt. This DIY trend took off after Twitter user puchuco709 who makes silver accessories, tweeted a picture of a glossy ball that looks like it's made of metal. The user created the ball by hammering and polishing a 52-feet-long roll of aluminum foil until it was perfectly round and shiny.

The trend took off as people were turning aluminum foil rolls into metallic glossy balls that was made by hammering and polishing aluminum foil.

It's satisfying seeing each wrinkle in the aluminum foil disappear as the ball gets shinier and shinier with the constant hammering.

This project is simplistic and wonderfully tedious. All it needs is aluminum foil, hammers, sandpaper, metal polish and an incredible amount of patience and a willingness to surrender to the process. The experience is meditative once you accept that it takes time and commitment.

Away from the negative effects of the internet, the goals for this projects is to teach students grit, focus, and quietude while making art.
