Shining Trombones with Slick Slides

My students need two properly working trombones and an alto saxophone case as well as various cleaning supplies and lubricants to keep our band sounding great!

My Students

"But I can't get to 6th position any faster" is often a frustration expressed by my young trombone students. Many of our trombones are from the 1970's and early 1980's and have most certainly seen better days.

We are an urban school with the fundamental belief that any child has the right to study music.

The vast majority of our students cannot afford to purchase, nor even rent a musical instrument from a local store, so we must provide instruments for the children. There are currently 250 students in our band program, most of whom have never played a band instrument prior to entering our school. They are amazing to work with, for they not only work hard, but perhaps more importantly, they work together. Our student body hails from all over the world, speaks a multitude of languages and brings with them unique perspectives and cultural understandings. Together they win state and local adjudications and participate in All County and various other music programs within the local community.

My Project

The trombone is a unique instrument know for it's ability to slide from note to note. Unfortunately, many of our trombones are challenging to play because after 30-40 years of service, the slides have withstood more than their fair share of student use. We are requesting two new trombones. This will ensure that more students have working instruments on which to learn and practice. Learning a musical instrument is tough, and should not be made any more difficult for the children due to sub-par equipment. In addition, we are asking for various lubricants and cleaning agents for the brass instruments to keep them in working order, swabs to clean our clarinets and a new alto saxophone case, as several of ours are broken.

This week my students will be participating in the State Adjudication Festival.

Many will be doing so using sub-par equipment. In spite of these challenges, my students do remarkably well every year. Please help us get one step closer to putting a working instrument into the hand of every child who desires to learn music!
